EMPOWER HANDICAP, a nonprofit organization based in Michigan, is providing school kits to children with disabilities in the Plateaux and Maritime regions of Togo, West Africa.

As part of promoting inclusive education for all, the NGO Empower Handicap has launched its second edition of distributing school supplies to children with disabilities in the Ogou, Amou, Zio and Yoto counties in Togo. This project, which began during the 2023-2024 school year, aims to facilitate access to education for these young individuals by providing them with the necessary resources for academic success.

For the 2024-2025 school year, Empower Handicap has intensified its efforts by renewing this initiative, under the coordination of its representative in Togo, Rev. Fr. Kwami Edem Afoutou, regional coordinator Mr. Sena Ayitsewou, and a dedicated team of volunteers. Together, they work to promote the educational inclusion of children and adolescents living with disabilities, offering them not only school books but also hope for success.

An Initiative Welcomed by the Educational Community and Local Authorities

The distribution ceremony took place in the presence of local authorities, teachers, school board members, as well as parents and students. All expressed their joy and gratitude for this initiative, which helps to address some of the major obstacles faced by children with disabilities in their educational journey.

A teacher present at the ceremony shared his enthusiasm, stating: “This action goes beyond providing books. It sends a strong message: every child, regardless of their disability, has the right to education and deserves to be supported. We are grateful to Empower Handicap for this ongoing commitment.”

Unwavering Support from the Diaspora

Empower Handicap’s efforts extend further. Its representative in the United States, Mr. Matthieu FAGBEDJI, reassured parents, teachers, and students about the continuity of this mission. He declared: “Empower Handicap will continue to make a difference, one child at a time. We firmly believe that education is a powerful tool for the empowerment of children with disabilities, and we are committed to supporting these young people in pursuing their dreams.”

This initiative is part of a broader approach aimed at encouraging children with disabilities to continue their studies despite the challenges they face. Empower Handicap advocates for an approach centered on inclusion and equal opportunities for all.

Conclusion

Empower Handicap’s initiative in Togo highlights the importance of both international and local solidarity in the fight for the inclusion of people with disabilities. Through this distribution of school supplies, the children concerned can approach the new school year with essential educational tools for their success. This second edition confirms the NGO’s determination to continue and expand its efforts, making a difference.

Empower Handicap and its local partners will continue to collaborate to ensure a better future for these children and to ensure that, in the coming years, every child, regardless of their situation, can access education without barriers.
